New Year, New Start?

Are you already planning for 2010? It is easy to get totally overwhelmed by Christmas but if you want to improve your work-life balance in 2010, now is the time to start making plans. Here are some resolutions to help any mum make 2010 a great year.

  1. If you’re in employment but want to spend more time with the family, find out about flexible work. You’re entitled to ask to work flexibly and this can benefit both you and your employer. You could ask to come in later and leave later, or to work all your hours over fewer days. Have you looked into term time working or annualised hours? Check out your options, make a list of benefits for your employer than put your proposal to them. They have to look at your request seriously.

  2. If you are at home and would love to start earning, make your resolution for 2010 to find out about flexible ways to earn. Start by noting down when you would be available to work. Look into childcare if necessary. Then look on websites like Family Friendly Working for ideas of how other mums earn, and check out our job pages for employment and business opportunities.

  3. If you want to earn money on your terms, think about starting your own business. For maximum support and a business idea that’s tried and tested, think about party plan or direct sales. You can get started for less than £200 – but remember that you need to sell to succeed.

  4. If you have a great idea for a product, why not make 2010 the year that you turn that idea into reality? Check out the Next Big Kitchen Table Idea competition which is open for entries until the 31st of January 2010.

  5. If you want to offer a service, why not make 2010 the year that you retrain. You could brush up your computer skills to become a VA, take a craft course so you can sell what you make or start training in a complementary therapy.

  6. If you have a business of your own, make 2010 the year that it really takes off. Spend a few hours noting down where you’d like the business to be by this time next year. Have an overall aim, and a few specific goals, then spend this year turning your goals into reality.

Good luck, whatever your resolution.
